RYA Coastal Skipper Course
The RYA Coastal Skipper Course is designed for those who want to skipper a yacht on coastal passages both day and night, while mastering the skills needed to navigate challenging coastal conditions.
The RYA Coastal Skipper qualification is the next step in your sailing journey. Tailored for experienced sailors, this advanced skipper course will help you master the art of passage planning, boat handling, and night sailing in tidal waters. You’ll gain confidence and practical sailing experience to handle larger yachts on longer journeys, preparing you for Yachtmaster Coastal certification.
All our RYA sailing courses start in Mylor Yacht Harbour close to Falmouth and Truro, unless otherwise agreed. We provide free car parking for all our course participants.
During the 5-day Coastal Skipper training, you’ll cover:
- Passage Planning: Advanced planning and execution of coastal passages.
- Tidal Navigation: Effective use of tidal streams and navigation techniques.
- Night Sailing: Experience sailing and skippering at night.
- Boat Handling: Mastering advanced yacht handling under both power and sail.
- Safety at Sea: Enhanced safety protocols and man-overboard drills.
This course is perfect for those who:
- Hold an RYA Day Skipper qualification or have equivalent experience.
- Want to skipper longer coastal passages.
- Are preparing for more complex navigation and sailing in challenging conditions.
- Have experience sailing in tidal waters and wish to upgrade their skills.
Prerequisites
To enroll, you need:
- RYA Day Skipper certification or comparable experience.
- At least 15 days at sea (with 2 days as skipper).
- 300 miles sailed and 8 hours of night sailing experience.
5 full days. Courses start at 17:00 on a Sunday and end at 15:00 on a Friday.
It is required for you to spend the 5 nights on board as part of the course.

Our RYA Coastal Skipper training is led by experienced instructors who focus on practical learning in real-world sailing scenarios. Whether you’re preparing for the Yachtmaster exam or simply want to feel more confident on the water, this course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to become a proficient coastal skipper.

By completing this coastal sailing course, you’ll be qualified to:
- Skipper yachts confidently in coastal waters by day and night.
- Navigate challenging coastal conditions.
- Handle boats safely in restricted spaces and harbors.
- Plan and execute longer coastal passages.
- For mixed group courses our teaching ratio is 1:4
- For private courses our maximum ratio is 1:5
- We use all three of our boats for training – About our boats – Take A Turn Yachting
- All of our boats are a similar size and are a 3 cabin layout.
- Breakfasts and lunch are included for each day.
- 3 evening meals are provided
- 2 evenings we will go ashore for dinner – the cost of this is not included.
- There is always plenty of snacks onboard, cereal bars, fruit etc but if you have any specific favourite snacks it is best to pack some your self.
- Teas, coffees, herbal teas, squash and juice are onboard.
- Please do notify us at the time of booking about any specific dietary requirements.
- Everyone is expected to pitch in with the preparation of meals and drinks through out the day. Meals are generally made in advance and frozen so they can be cooked easily throughout the week.
- Courses take place on our 3 cabin boats.
- Your instructor will take one cabin.
- This leaves 2 cabins and the saloon berths for the group.
- A single occupancy rate is offered if you would prefer to have a cabin to yourself.
The RYA Competent Crew course is designed to run with a crew of other Competent Crew participants or with RYA Dayskipper Candidates.

- Suncream
- Anti seasickness medication
- Any required medication
- Layers to go under waterproofs

- Warm clothes for the evenings
- Sleeping bag and pillow
- Phone charger and 12v plug
- Note book and pencils
- Refillable water bottle
- Head torch with a red light function (not essential but useful)
- Spare glasses if you need corrective lenses
- Wash kit and towel
- Foam earplugs
- A soft bag is far better than a suitcase
