RYA Practical Courses: Competent Crew

5-Day RYA Competent Crew Course:
Mylor, Falmouth

Comprehensive Introduction to Yachting

The 5-day RYA Competent Crew course offers a comprehensive introduction to yachting, complete with 5 nights of accommodation onboard the yacht. This course is perfect for beginners, requiring no previous sailing experience, and is designed to be both fun and educational. You’ll receive informative instruction that will equip you with the skills to become a valuable crew member.

Practical, Hands-On Experience

The RYA Competent Crew course is designed to make you just that. Rather than sitting in the cockpit while things happen around you, you will gain the knowledge and confidence to be an active crew member; able to helm a vessel under motor and sail, understand the various parts of the boat and rigging including rope work and winch use, have a practical understanding of Man Over Board recovery and generally go from being along for the ride to being a safe and useful crew member. Other topics we will cover include; meteorology, tides, emergency situations and fire fighting, personal safety kit, boat safety kit, sea sickness and general duties.

Clear Progression from Beginner to Skipper

Our RYA Competent Crew course is the perfect introduction to sailing. The syllabus is laid out to help you on the pathway from total beginner to competent and independent skipper. As the courses progress in difficulty you will see more pre-requisites listed, it is important to be honest and realistic with these as you will get far more out of being on the appropriate course rather than trying to race ahead.

Small Group Sizes for Personalised Instruction

We limit our group size to 4 on our advertised courses so you will get plenty of time at the helm and be sure of lots of tuition from our instructors. For private courses you are able to bring 5 people if you wish.

Combined Courses and Continued Practice

The RYA courses are designed to run combined with other courses in the same scheme, so a Competent Crew course will often run with a Day Skipper course.
